WYLDEST THE POET

North London night creatures Wyldest are back with their especially dreamy, affecting blend of nocturnal pop and slick synth-rock with latest release ‘The Poet’. Over their two years of online existence, the trio have only released six tracks, but - as demonstrated by the sixth - it’s quality that drives this project. Previously, we’ve swooned over Beach House-like ‘Wanders’ and brooding-yet-biting ‘Stalking Moon’, but ‘The Poet’ could very well top the lot. The deeply pulsating dance beat, ethereal vocal samples and atmospheric guitar introduction beckons the listener in. Not very often do you find such correlation between the lyrics and instrumentation, but Zoe Mead’s pan words - “I remember the beating of the drum / Memories are nothing to me now” - are echoed through the hazy production and emphasised percussion. For the chorus, Wyldest take flight from usual dream-pop patterns for an original catchy chorus that places our protagonist in an an ‘80s night club, Blondie most likely playing over the speakers, the desperate search for human connection hanging in the air. The downtempo drums switch to intensified upbeatness, swirling around the consistent guitar refrain. In short, ‘The Poet’ is dizzyingly good. - HT
